I usually try my luck here on my blogs first when I need help in finding a service that is needed for my company.  So here it goes :-)

I am looking for a phone system for our new offices in Santa Cruz that is not based on regular phones but VOIP.  I looked at Vonage but it was not geared towards business, as you can't have a phone attendant to request pushing a specific extension to reach a department.  I also looked at Packet8, it was a good solution but very expensive as you will have to have a full line for each employee that needs a phone on their desk to make calls, it came out to about $350 per month + $1400 startup fee for 9 phones in the office with a fax line.

They suggested having only 3 phones in the office, one for sales, one in the conference room and one for management, the rest of the team can use the phone in the conference room which sounded lame to me to ask employees to go to the conference room to make a call or use their cell phone. That costs about $185 per month.

Anyone heard of a different company that can make this work for us?

Thanks for your suggestion in advance

Hi Lino,

Ringcentral has a product called DigitalLine VOIP Service that may be what you are looking for. I have not used the product, but it seems to have some interesting features.

There are also a couple of Skype Extras.

SiSky Enterprise Edition provides a SIP Server which would allow it to interface into Asterisk, an open source PBX system (which out of the box wants analog phone lines).

ExSky is a Skype gateway which allows it to integrate with PBXs.

I haven't used any of these systems, so seek out advice from others but these links should give you something to investigate.

Good luck!

Hi Lino,

It is absolutely ridiculous to ask your employees to go into the boardroom every time they wish to make a phone call.

Consider a company called TalkSwitch. They've been around since 1990, and they pride themselves on being the industry's most owner-friendly hybrid PBX phone system. With TalkSwitch systems, you are NOT charged a huge startup fee, and all software upgrades are free of charge. The beauty of a TalkSwitch is its flexibility. When you're ready to switch over to VoIP, it'll be ready. But you can also have analog lines at the same time.

Each unit comes loaded with 36 built-in voicemail boxes with 2 hours memory, eliminating the need for phone company voicemail. It also has an automatic fax detection.
Each unit also comes with a 9-level auto attendant, so your customers are promptly directed to the person they are calling. This also eliminates the need for a receptionist. There are too many features to list here.

TalkSwitch also offers 4 analog phones ranging from $119-$189, and 3 IP phones ranging from $119-$239. Their hybrid PBX systems range from $495-$1,895.

Check out www.talkswitch.com to see what I'm talking about. They also have a promotion through Facebook where you can save 10% on your purchase if you join the group.

Cheers and good luck with the search!
Mike

If you want to do a comparison of all PBX systems and prices at the same time, then use the PBX phone system comparison tool over at Riveroffers.com. If you want to stick with the 3 phone system from Packet8, but want all of your employees to have their own phones at their desks, then get the new USB SIP phone adapters from MagicJack.com.

Magic Jack is a box that plugs into your computer's USB port and then you can plug a regular land line phone into it. Magicjack has great sound quality, a great online interface and phone book and your phone messages get emailed to you, so you can listen to them anywhere. Magicjack is just $39.95 for the jack and the first year's service, and then it's just $19.95 per year after that. I use it for my business, and it works great. (I have my toll free number ring in to it... it saves me a ton.)

Thanks folks for the help, I reviewed all the companies discussed in your comments plus 4 more that I found on the internet as well.
We decided to go with Packet8.com, although expensive, it proved to be the best value available and richest features that will meet our needs.
I will report in a month on the quality and experience with Packet8 here
Thanks a million for your help
